Corona Virus:

If you think one dog disease sounds just like the other, think again. While the corona virus may have similar symptoms to the others, such as parvovirus – like diarrhea – additional symptoms to this illness include loss of appetite, lethargy, and dehydration.

Canine corona virus (CCV) has the most serious impact on puppies; most dogs, in particular adults, have already been exposed to corona virus antibodies during their lifetimes.  This infectious disease is spread by the virus shedding in the feces of infected dogs.  Many puppies infected with this virus have also been affected by the parvovirus, thus making it difficult to distinguish.

As with any unfamiliar behavior, when you detect symptoms in your dog it’s time to call the veterinarian. Once your vet conducts tests for the canine corona virus, it will be easier to ascertain which disease your dog has contracted and subsequently, recommendations for treatments.  During this time it’s crucial to ensure your dog is hydrated.  In fact, water may be administered intravenously to prevent dehydration if your puppy or dog is not consuming sufficient amounts of water.

Prevention, however, is vital: vaccinations are available to prevent puppies and adult dogs against the canine corona virus.  Plus, sanitation with commercial disinfectants is extremely beneficial and should always be adhered to in kennels and breeding.

At The Dog Bowl, nothing is more important than your pets’ health and well being.  For more information about canine corona virus please contact your vet.
