Halloween Costumes:

It’s not too early to start thinking the ghoulish and goblin holiday of Halloween.  And if you want to dress up your dog in a Halloween dog costume, you’re not alone.

So whether you want to get a Halloween dog costume that’s a devil, clown, or little cowboy, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Safety matters.  Your dog is not accustomed to wearing a Halloween dog costume so try not to force the issue.  Take a few photos and then if Fido looks a bit fidgety, take the cue and take off the garb.
  • Some dog Halloween costumes are more elaborate than others. If you have a little pooch, similar to a little baby, you would not include any items which could be torn off and swallowed. Look for big items instead; like a superman cape or bunny ears or your favorite football jersey.  Some Halloween dog costumes come with props like a crown or a pirate’s hat so although your dog may want to take off the cape or clothing associated with the costume, the headpiece may be fine.  You’ll need to pay attention to the Halloween dog costume on your pooch to see how comfortable he looks in it.
  • Although Halloween could be a fun opportunity for you to wear matching costumes with your dog, again, safety is important.  Don’t force the issue if your pet looks uncomfortable.
  • Puppies grow! If you have a puppy and have an adorable Halloween dog costume from last year, most likely it will not fit this year.
  • Like clothing, be sure to clean it.  Although this may seem like a no-brainer, you would be surprised.  After all, you really only see this Halloween dog costume once a year!
  • But…if the costume is super cute and there is a party you may want your dog to wear his Halloween dog costume on other occasions. For instance, if the Halloween dog costume is a bunny, that could be an appropriate adornment for Easter.
  • While Halloween dog costumes could be fun going with the staples of a jester or a clown, it’s an opportunity to be creative!  If you have more than one dog, maybe get matching dog costumes or opposites, like an angel and a devil, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, or even a bride and groom

And keep in mind, as much fun as Halloween dog costumes can be, safety and comfort are concerns.  At The Dog Bowl, nothing is more important than your pets’ safety and well being.  For more information about Halloween dog costumes, call us at 713-529-0334 or toll-free at 1-877-4RAW-DOG.
