Controlling the pet population:

As Bob Barker of “The Price is Right” hangs up his microphone, one can’t argue this fact: he certainly attempted to help control the pet population by saying at the end of each show to get your pets spayed or neutered.

But, what does it really mean?  First of all, spaying relates to females only whereas neutering refers to both sexes but usually applies to males. It refers to the sterilization of animals by removing the male testicles or the female ovaries and uterus to eliminate the ability to procreate.  Neutering has sometimes reduced aggression in male dogs but has sometimes increased aggression in female dogs.  Actually, as for a positive effect, spaying and neutering may decrease the risk of hormone-driven diseases such as mammary cancers.  Then again, specific medical ailments may begin after neutering such as urinary problems in females.

The ASPCA has advised that dogs not intended for further breeding should be spayed or neutered so they don’t have undesired puppies.  Consider this: in some countries, due to overpopulation puppies which are born to strays or as the result of accidental breeding may end up being killed in shelters.

While we’re not advocating one stance over another for your dog’s situation, we are advocates of getting educated. For more information about controlling the pet population by spaying or neutering contact your vet or click here to see more questions to ask your vet.
