Raw Bones Feeding Guidelines:If you have already become a raw bone enthusiast, make sure you are administering them safely and effectively to your pet. Chances are, if you are feeding raw bones, you are on the raw diet and have seen the radical changes a healthy diet will offer. Many would consider bones a treat or an extra snack, but in fact; raw bones are considered food, so there is definitely the possibility of overfeeding. Large breeds will obviously eat more than small breeds, but either way you never want them gorging themselves on anything. Dogs can be like children, and if they are given the chance, they will eat like there is no tomorrow! Be sure to monitor your pet’s eating habits when you first give them a raw bone. The first thing to know about feeding your pet raw bones is that this is raw meat you’re feeding! You wouldn’t eat a steak on your bathroom counter would you? Don’t give your dog the bone and let them run free. They may hide it, bury it, run it through the dirt, or run in through your living room, none of which as desirable places for you to have raw meat. Make sure your pet has a designated area to eat the bone; a towel, a placemat on the kitchen floor, or a small area where the bone and your house will stay as clean as possible. Follow common sense guidelines about cleaning up after your pet and the raw bone. Wipe down any countertop and tile surface after feeding the bones, and remember to obviously wash your hands! Dogs and cats are able to handle higher levels of bacteria, so raw meat that may be healthy for them, could be a potential threat to you. Also remember to put the bone back in the freezer when you’re done feeding. Wrap it in saran wrap or place it in a plastic bag to keep it apart from other products in your freezer, and this will also prevent freezer burn. Secondly, raw bones need to be fed with portion control in mind. If you have a small breed, only allow them about 10-15 minutes to chew on the bone; anything more will result in overfeeding. Larger breeds can go up to about half an hour, but make sure you don’t let them eat more. If a dog knows that they can only eat their bone for a limited amount of time, they will have something to look forward to next time, instead of being spoiled and knowing they can have it whenever they please. Raw bones are a great part of the raw food diet; they work on your pet’s teeth, and offer vital nutrients and proteins. The Dog Bowl offers a great selection of raw bones ranging from chicken and turkey necks, buffalo bones, and beef bones. Remember to read the basics about dog bones before purchasing any raw bone in order to ensure the best quality for your pet.
