Dog Chewing:

Is it any wonder why chew toys exist?  In essence, canines love to chew. As your puppy gets accustomed to its new home, dog chewing is a common problem for owners who have canines less than one year old. Whether it’s their exploration or teething or simply for fun, dog chewing is a fun activity for them! Not so much fun for you, though.

Some experts say since dogs don’t have thumbs they aren’t able to pick up objects so they examine them with their mouths instead.  Plus, when a puppy is four to eight months old, they shed their puppy teeth and start growing their adult teeth.  Chewing may diminish the pain with teething.  Plus, dog chewing gives them something to do!  Bursting with energy in a home with a scrumptious couch, they may inadvertently direct their energy towards your couch!  Plus, some dogs suffering from separation anxiety may start chewing on objects which resemble their owner’s scents.

To dimish dog chewing, some experts recommend a small dog-proofed area will be a way for your puppy to be away from potentially hazardous items to chew.  Examples include electrical wires, wallpaper corners which may curl up, and cords relating to drapes or curtains.

Next, you’ll want to invest in chew toys.  For instance, dog chew toys will keep her interest level high and will hopefully decrease the chances of your dog chewing on an object in your home.  Like other dog training, you’ll want to positively reinforce good behavior and negatively reinforce the bad behavior. If your dog chews a table leg for instance, give a verbal warning such as “NO!” and then draw your pup’s attention to a chew toy instead. Easier said than done of course!

Since your puppy may be adjusting and therefore exploring your new house, don’t give your puppy access to every room. For instance, close bedroom doors or install pet gates as you notice your puppy is chewing its way through your house.  Eventually experts say “this too shall pass” but if not, your veterinarian or neighbors may have additional behavior training methods to reduce dog chewing in your home.
