How to give your dog liquid medication:

Once your veterinarian has diagnosed your dog’s medical condition and prescribed medication that should be good news, right? Well, as a responsible pet owner you know this could be challenge getting your dog to take medication.

When it comes to getting your dog to take liquid medication, the good news is that it’s somewhat easier than getting your dog to take a pill. For instance, you’ll want to get the medication ready which means shaking the bottle and getting the plunger ready for action.

Next, you’ll call your dog over in a happy, pleasant-sounding voice. If you’re not anxious hopefully your dog won’t be anxious either. Take your dog to a comfortable spot, one in which he’s familiar with. Similar to giving your dog pills, you will want to place your dog’s hind against something so he can’t simply back away from you. Pick up the dropper with one hand while using the other hand to gently grasp your dog’s muzzle while tilting his or her head slightly back. This is critical in giving your dog liquid medication.

Here comes the “fun” part – insert the tip of the syringe or dropper to the area between the dog’s cheek and bath teeth while slowly administering the dog’s medication. Keep in mind you won’t want to administer the medication faster than your dog can swallow so don’t try to give the liquid all at once. This could result in choking or vomiting and yes, your dog may unfortunately spit out some of the medication.

Once you’ve slowly and successfully administered the dog medication, hold your dog’s mouth close, and ensure his or her head is slightly elevated – this will make swallowing much easier.
Now comes the really fun part – praise and treats! Show your dog affection and give yourself a pat on the back for giving your dog liquid medication. Be sure to wipe off any medication that may have gotten on your dog’s face by using a soft cloth and then rinse the syringe or dropper with water for the next use.
