Car Travel with your dog:

Let’s face it, you love your dog. So, whether you’re going on vacation with your dog or a little errand if your dog is along for the ride, there are certain things to keep in mind when traveling with your dog in the car.

For proper pet care, the best place in your car for the dog is a cage. For instance, a large dog should be in a cage or in the back seat by sitting or lying down.  Regardless of where your dog is in your car, he should always get used to being in the same place in the car.

As for the worst place in when car traveling with your dog? On your lap!  Other bad places are between the window and the driver’s seat, with its head out the window, underneath the back window, in the trunk – very bad - this could lead to suffocation.

Although many people love their SUV’s, when traveling with your dog it’s important to cover windows. The bigger the glass window, the more heat and scorching temperatures will be brought to your car.  Even if your windows are open, this is still dangerous for your dog in transit.  If you blast the air conditioning and keep the windows open simultaneously, your dog can catch conjunctivitis.

A separation net is also recommended to separate an area for a dog in a van. Plus, a safety blanket helps prevent your dog from jumping to the front or sliding between seats while breaking. 

As far as bathroom breaks, remember to walk your dog.  On a typical driving day, your dog will need to relieve himself a few times. Your dog will also need to walk around (same applies to you).  The same rules of dog walking apply: always bring a leash and walk your dog on the leash.  Plus, your dog will be in unfamiliar territory. If your dog for instance picks up a strong scent and get separated from its owner.

Keep in mind when traveling with your dog for short or long distances in your car, your dog may be anxious.  On a highway, for example, the noise of wheels, the engine, and other cars can be heard by your dog.  If you slow down it’s possible your dog will calm down.  For more information about car travel with your dog click here.
