Moving your pet:

Just as the summer months equate to sun and sand, they may also equate to moving.  Whether you’re moving into a new house or old, when it comes to moving your pet, it’s not unlike traveling with your dog.  In other words, it encompasses a lot of preparation and planning but will be full of new adventures!

  • When moving with your pet, contact the health department in your new town for information about laws as it relates to health certificates for your dog.
  • Go to the vet.  During a pet move, make sure they’re current with their shots. In addition, prior to moving you should ensure they’ve had their rabies shots so you’re complying with laws in your new town.  Plus, there could possibly be additional vaccinations your pet may need – be sure to check with your vet prior to moving.
  • Parting is such sweet sorrow!  If you’re moving with your pet to a far location, it’s time to get a new vet in that area.  Your current vet may be able to provide you with new vets in your area. Plus, be sure to ask to retain your pet records when moving with your pet.
  • While you’ll need to find out the laws such as the number of dogs per household, if any types of fences are not allowed, when it comes to the local government or local governing board (if you live in an apartment complex or condominium) and pet moves, there may be strict policies regarding pets. 
  • Anxiety.  Ahhhh!  Your pet may sense there’s chaos in the air so it’s important to spend some time with your pet prior to moving with your dog or cat.  For instance, you may want to go back to basic obedience training with your dog.  During the change this will be particularly helpful.
  • Moving with your dog in particular encompasses just that: moving.  A secure dog crate will help keep your dog in one area while the movers are busy packing your home. Another option of course is to board your pooch at a kennel to keep him safe and away from the commotion.
  • Remember to pack the toys!  During the actual move with your pet, they may be nervous.  You may want to pack some of his favorite toys and treats during the actual journey.
  • When moving with your pet, they’ll notice a change and new environment.  When you arrive at your new home it’s important to unpack their belongings first.  For instance, unpack your dog’s bed, toys, and water bowls as soon as possible.
