Training your dog:

Congratulations!  You’re either a new pet owner ready to train your dog or involved with the ongoing process of training.  Regardless, you’ve come to the right place so we’ll get started right away.

  • Behavior training.  This training involves teaching your dog to well, be a good dog.  While she can’t say please or thank you, training your dog behaviorally is along these same lines..  Behavior training includes housetraining, good behavior around other people and dogs, reasonable leash manners, and good manners when in the public.
  • Obedience training.  This may be the typical kind of training you think of when training your dog such as how to heel or sit.  The emphasis in this realm is prompt and precise behavior.  This type of training is usually for specific tasks as a result of the owner’s command and is not related to behavioral training.
  • Activity training includes hunting, herding, search and rescue.  Training your dog for the abovementioned activities are very specific and have typically been bred to do.  However, other activities also involve training such as sports like Frisbee, aligity, etc.

A combination of the different types of training will only benefit your dog.  For instance, as you train your dog to heel, if she has been behaviorally trained, she will not pull on the leash.  One of the best ways to learn how to understand and control your dog is to attend behavior oriented training classes.  More complex training would involve ensuring your dog has mastered behavior and obedience training to the sports type activities.
