Potty training:

Potty training puppy.  It may sound daunting to some pet owners, but to others it’s merely part of the job.

Before you begin potty training, you may want to ask some questions.  For instance, if you bought your puppy from a responsible breeder, chances are the breeder has already started potty training your pooch.

Crate or confine your puppy when you’re unable to watch him. This is important since you want to keep your eyes on him at all times during the potty training.  And when he’s not crated, keep certain rooms off limits.  Permit your pooch to enter rooms with tile or washable floors. Translation: this ensures “accidents” won’t reuin caprets.

Keep your puppy on a schedule and feed him at the same time every day.  Try to ensure he goes to bed the same time every day as well during the potty training.

During this time of potty training puppy, water supply should be bountiful.  If your puppy eats dry dog food, then definitely supply a lot of water. However, during potty training it should be noted to feed your puppy at least four hours before bed time and then remove his water two hours before bed time.

Another item to add to the routine is taking your puppy to potty after every meal as well as when he wakes up in the morning, right before he goes to bed at night, and when he wakes up from a nap.  Take him outside on a leash to a spot that you want him to go to.

When you go outside there could be chances that he doesn’t actually go potty.  During this potty training period, wait ten minutes and if he doesn’t go, return indoors nad put him in his crate for ten to fifteen minutes.  After that time, take him to potty again.  Afterwards when he actually “goes”, praise him and reward him with a treat.  Leave ample time, however, since he may have to go again!  Don’t rush it; giving him enough time while outdoors will help decrease the chances that he’ll have to go as soon as you return indoors.

Lastly, if you don’t have the time or patience to potty train a puppy and you haven’t already brought him home, you may want to consider adopting or buying an older puppy or adult dog who has already been potty trained.
