Run With Your Dog!

Are you and your poor dog putting on a couple of extra pounds?  Are you fighting the battle of the bulge, and is the bulge winning?  If yes have no fear!  The Dog Bowl is here to once again solve all of your problems!  Well maybe not all of your problems, but we can definitely help you and your dog stay in shape, and have a great time doing it.  How? Simple—running with your dog!

That's right running with your dog is a great way to get in shape, and you and your little guy will have a 'dog' of a good time as well!  The news and Internet abound with the benefits of cardiovascular exercise, like running.  You and your dog will look better, you will feel better, and it will increase your circulation, help lower your cholesterol, and a host of other health-related benefits.

So grab your running shoes, get a good leash for your dog and hit the pavement!  It's time to go running!

Start Slow and Set Goals…

The first thing to remember is to start slowly.  Rome was not built in a day, and neither should you and your dog go out running the same distance that you used to run when you played sports in high school.  Start slow and respect your limits.  Try a short run along the beach, a park trail, or some other type of scenic vista.  Look for signs of fatigue in your animal, and when the both of you are tired—stop.

Try running a little bit every day, either before or after work, keep it consistent. Gradually increase your distance until you start seeing the pounds drop away, and you and your dog are looking sharp, sexy, and in primo shape!

Invest In Some Gear…

Some things that will make your running more enjoyable are:

  • Tunes!  An MP3 player or and iPod will make your running go a lot easier.  Listening to your favorite tunes will help raise your endorphins, and make running much nicer.  Your dog will pick up on your happy mood and will feed off of your excitement.
  • Water!  You and your little friend are going to want to stay hydrated while you are running so make sure you bring some water for both you and your pet.  Browse our online store and find some items that will help make carrying some extra water for your dog a snap!
  • Get a new leash!  You may want to get some type of leash that will enable your dog to run next to you the most comfortably.  The Dog Bowl has a leash that simply fits around your waist that we love - click here to see it
  • A Harness!  If you don't already have one you will want to get a harness for your dog so that you can attach the leash to the back of your dog instead of the neck area.  This will make it much more comfortable for your dog, and if you use a retractable leash you will almost never have to worry about the leash getting caught in your dog's legs as the two of you are running.  (You may have to worry about the retractable catching yours however, or someone else's legs on a trail!  So just be careful if you run with a retractable leash - we don't advise this as the best option for controlling your dog while running.)
