Cat First Aid:

Oh no, say it isn’t so! If you’re experiencing a cat emergency, that is your precious feline is in some sort of danger, there are several items to remember. First, stay calm. Is your cat in imminent danger? Do you need to administer cat first aid or are you in danger as well trying to help your cat?

Catch your cat, hold him close and keep him away of potential danger if you can.  Evaluate.  Is your life in danger or is your cat’s life in danger?  Call the veterinarian immediately. This is how you should think: simple, quick, efficient.

The best thing you can do is to remain calm and call your veterinarian.  There are some things you can do to help assist your veterinarian during cat emergencies: first, observe your cat.  Hold your cat and check the pace of his breathing.  Does he gasp or are they continuous breaths? Does he have an even pulse?  Granted, we’re not medical experts but in certain circumstances even the simple tasks may go unnoticed as you try to administer cat first aid.  Try not to carry the burden, but rather while administering cat first aid, take notice to the overall demeanor of your cat.  Reward his obedience whether it’s with a hug or few praise words.

At this point you may need to clean the injuries, bandage or bind as per the cat’s first aid kit, or do cardiopulmonary revival – not all pet owners know how to do this. Even lifting and moving your sick cat needs to be done delicately and with care. You don’t want to further injure your cat but you want to ensure for the time being during cat’s first aid, you want to be there for your cat in this dire time.  Overall, your goal is to be there for your cat. You can’t cure him or heal him, but you can help provide assistance, avoid further damages, and try to re-establish his health.
