Doggie Paws:

An essential part of taking care of a dog, is taking good care of their paws.  A dog's paws can be where many health problems begin.  Now, a dog's paws are very sensitive, and the first thing to do is get them used to you touching their paws so that you can check for any potential health hazards.

Your dog should get used to their paws being touched by you at a very young age.  From when they are puppies you should hold their paws so they are used to touch, and will be more comfortable with their paw pads getting touched.  Try giving them a treat, and then take one of their paws and check it for the following things.

  • Nails. The first thing that should be looked at is their nails. Are they getting a bit to long. If they are they could actually be pulling away from their paws while they walk.  This will cause bleeding and is very painful for your animal.  Follow The Dog Bowls online guide for trimming their nails, or have them done by a dog care professional (a vet or a professional groomer)
  • Ticks and Bugs.  If the hair between their paws is allowed to grow to long, then tick and other little buggies can get in there and hide. You always want to make sure you are checking in between the paws pads to see if there are any tics hiding in their.
  • Bruises or Abrasions.  Is their any skin missing or bald spots? This could be indicative of a larger problem that your vet should be made aware of. So if there is anything that seems unusual take your dog to the vet right away and have them examine your dog's paws.
  • Paw Licking.  Dogs naturally want to lick their paws to keep them clean and well maintained.  This is usually not a problem.  But you need to be aware of what is getting into their paws.  For instance if you use fertilizer you want to make sure that it is safe for your pets to ingest.  Especially if you use insecticide on your lawn, it is probably a good idea to keep your dog off of the lawn for a while to.  If that stuff gets on his paws, you can be sure that he will eventually digest it.  This can lead to your little dog getting sick or even worse!  So be aware of what your dog puts his paws on!
