New puppy love:

Ah, spring has sprung. And while this may mean spring cleaning, it’s also a signal of new beginnings.  Some new beginnings may signify the addition of a new pet and what better time to bring home a new member of the family than when the weather is nice so you can enjoy the exercise outdoors.

Prior to bringing home your puppy, it’s important to gather supplies.  This includes going shopping for a variety of items (or, if you already have a dog you will already have these items around but you’ll need additional ones).  This includes dog food and treats, water and food dishes, a collar, a leash, an ID tag, a comfortable bed or crate, and yes, toys.

You’ll also need to dog-proof your home. This means you’ll check gates, doors, windows, screens, and fences.  As if you were babysitting a toddler, you’ll need to think the same way: put medications out of reach.  For instance, be sure to check for small objects like a mousetrap or forgotten mouse poison.

The day has arrived!  When you pick up your puppy for the first trip home, someone else should be home for a few days.  Then, come the introductions!  Your puppy needs to explore the house and get introduced to your family.  Keep in mind, your puppy will likely be very anxious so it’s important to have a cozy little bed or crate. 

During the day, a good rule of thumb is taking your puppy outside for relief after waking up, after play time, after meals, and possibly every fifteen minutes.  Note: the wait for dogs is two hours or longer.  Plus, your puppy may need a little relief in the middle of the night. This is not uncommon so be aware that you’ll need to be “on call” so to speak.

Shower your pet with love!  Play with your puppy throughout each day but be cautious: he/she will eat or drink anything they can.  Remove small items that pose a risk to choking.  As for the medicine?  Your puppy should have a visit to the veterinarian for a check up and all vaccinations.  On that note, obtain a license from the proper agency and be sure to register your dog’s ID with The Dog Bowl’s Lost and Found Program.
