Cat Claws:

While you love your feline, there’s one thing you may not be so fond of: the cat claws.  Scratching furniture or walls, sure it’s frustrating to see your cat’s claws do damage to your home but let’s think big picture.

Cat claws are essential to its existence.  It’s their line of defense, their secret weapon so to speak.  Whether they’re used to kill prey which could be their food, cat’s claws are also used to clean their bodies.  Some veterinarians may suggest to remove the cat’s claws via surgery.  Although the logic behind removing the cat’s claws is to stop having scratches on furniture, your home, and even you!

There are ways to try to eliminate the scratching without the extreme measure of removing the cat’s claws.  For instance, by keeping the claws intact the cat has its sense of power, its line of defense.  Experts recommend training the cat to not scratch your furniture.  Another means is to have a special item in which it is okay for your cat to scratch. After all, if it must indeed scratch the best best is to save an old piece of furniture (similar to keeping an old shoe for your dog) so your cat’s claws can be put to use on one old item rather than every item in your house. 

If you’re tired of having scratches on your arms and hands as a result of your cat’s claws, experts also recommend trying to diminish this by looking at your behavior.  For instance, if you’re trying to distract him or remove food while he’s eating, this could easily result in some scratches. Now, we’re not saying that every time you’re scratched by the cat’s claws that it’s your fault, but it is something to consider.
