Pit Bull Terriers:Congrats! You’re about to get a new puppy. When it comes to selecting a breed, however, there are several decisions to make. First of all, each dog breed is different; some require more time for grooming and exercising while others require less time and attention. So it’s no surprise the American Pit Bull Terrier and its signature short smooth coat makes it irresistible to a pet owner. With an average height of 18 – 22 inches and a weight range of 22 to 120 pounds, the American Pit Bull Terrier is known for well, being feisty. It has the strength of a bulldog with the ability to help farmers for instance in protecting their crops. The pit bull terrier is tough; they’re solid, muscular, and powerful. While this breed demonstrates courage, agility, strength, and power, these dogs are extremely loyal and devoted. As for the disclaimer? They are rough. They may exhibit aggression when it comes to unfamiliar dogs, small household pets, and even children. While they’re very protective of their family and their home, pit bulls are very active and aggressive. As for the type of owner who would be suited to raise this type of dog? An active one who is ready and willing to train the pit bull terrier given its affinity towards aggression. Training actually should not be as challenging as it is with other breeds; experts have indicated the pit bull terrier is very obedient and wants to please its owner. The key to effective training is to conduct intense training with this breed as well as obedience training early in its life. They don’t respond to negative punishment, rather they respond to positive reinforcement. The owner should praise often and be firm and patient. In addition to obedience training, this particular breed requires a lot of exercise. Whether it’s long walks on a leash, hiking, or mountain biking, they crave interaction with its owner and family. The next time you want to toss a Frisbee in the yard, it’s time to call your Fido to action. They can’t get enough of the exercise and attention. As for grooming? All you really need is a firm brush in order to minimize loose hair. Bathing should be done as needed and follow all regular rules of grooming as it relates to paw care, dental hygiene, etc. The pit bull however is susceptible to a variety of illnesses as a collective breed: heart disease, grass allergies, hereditary cataracts, and hip dysplasia. It’s important for potential owners of this particular breed to understand as much as possible about the time involved with this breed. Every puppy breed is different and each particular pup will yearn for your love and affection but specifically knowing that aggression is a hallmark of this breed, it’s important to be involved with training early on to minimize potential adverse attacks.
