Our dogs tell us they are scavengers:

Leave your dog alone with a garbage can and prove this truth. Any dog, wild or domestic, will eat the rotting remains of another animal that is dead, including its bones. This is our dog explaining that as one of nature's scavengers, it is adapted by long evolution to eat and actually requires lots of bones. Our dog is also explaining that as a scavenger, it can safely handle food that is decayed and contains bacteria.

Our dogs tell us that it is quite normal for them as scavengers to eat both soil and feces. If we examine the nutrients in feces, we find that feces supplies our dog with first class protein, essential fatty acids, B Vitamins, pro-biotics and vegetable fibre. I think you will agree that this is quite an impressive list.

Because our dogs are requesting feces as part of the food we supply them; we will oblige, but not with feces. If necessary, we will add first class protein such as eggs or cottage cheese; essential fatty acids (oils), B vitamins and pro-biotics as part of the diet or as supplements; and vegetable fibre as part of the diet. As soil eaters, our dogs are looking for trace minerals. For this we will add kelp and alfalfa to the diet.
