Caring for Your Dog: The Top Ten Essentials

Your dog gives you a lifetime of unconditional love, loyalty, and friendship. In return, she/he counts on you to provide her with food, water, safe shelter, regular veterinary care, exercise, companionship, and more. Take care of these ten essentials, and you'll be guaranteed to develop a rewarding relationship with your canine companion.

  1. Outfit your dog with a collar and ID tag. No matter how careful you are, there's a chance your companion may become lost—an ID tag greatly increases the chance that your pet will be returned home safely.
  2. Follow local laws for licensing your dog and vaccinating him for rabies. Check with your local shelter or humane society for information regarding legal requirements, where to obtain tags, and where to have your pet vaccinated.
  3. Follow this simple rule—off property, on leash. Even a dog with a valid license, rabies tag, and ID tag should not be allowed to roam outside of your home or fenced yard. It is best for you, your community, and your dog to keep your pet under control at all times.
  4. Give your dog proper shelter. A fenced yard with a doghouse is a bonus, especially for large and active dogs; however, dogs should never be left outside alone or for extended periods of time. Dogs need and crave companionship and should spend most of their time inside with their family.
  5. Take your dog to the veterinarian for regular check-ups. If you do not have a veterinarian, ask your local animal shelter or a pet-owning friend for a referral.
  6. Spay or neuter your dog. Dogs who have this routine surgery tend to live longer, be healthier, and have fewer behavior problems (e.g., biting, running away). By spaying or neutering your dog, you are also doing your part to reduce the problem of pet overpopulation.
  7. Give your pooch a nutritionally balanced diet, including constant access to fresh water. Ask your veterinarian for advice on what and how often to feed your pet.
  8. Enroll your dog in a training class. Positive training will allow you to control your companion's behavior safely and humanely, and the experience offers a terrific opportunity to enhance the bond you share with your dog.
  9. Give your dog enough exercise to keep him physically fit (but not exhausted). Most dog owners find that playing with their canine companion, along with walking him twice a day, provides sufficient exercise. If you have questions about the level of exercise appropriate for your dog, consult your veterinarian.
  10. Be loyal to and patient with your faithful companion. Make sure the expectations you have of your dog are reasonable and remember that the vast majority of behavior problems can be solved. If you are struggling with your pet's behavior, contact your veterinarian or local animal shelter for advice.

BARF Ongoing Research - Get involved?

BARF World will conduct research of a scientific nature to continually improve the health and welfare of our companion animals. (A portion of the funding for this research will come from BARF World membership fees.)

This research could include whole life feeding trials, complete blood counts, serum chemistry profiles, and urinalysis profiles.

The goal behind these studies is to continue the task of determining the best possible methods of feeding our companion animals.

We welcome participation in our studies and ask that you contact us directly with your availability. This is an ongoing study, which requires much support from our membership and BARF feeding public.

What is BARF all about?

Feeding pets their evolutionary diet (their “Bones and Raw Food” or BARF diet) is an approach to pet feeding that is a radical departure from the type of science that underpins the development of grain based commercial pet foods. This modern movement, which champions the use of evolutionary diets is based on feeding pets whole, raw, natural foods including whole raw eating bones. This style of feeding and belief in this philosophy enjoys a worldwide following that grows in numbers daily.

The manufacturers of modern grain based processed pet foods tell us that it is difficult if not impossible for pet owners or even vets to feed modern pets. They claim that only the scientists they employ are capable of determining proper nutrition for our pets. Dr Ian Billinghurst, one of the founders and shareholders of BARF World, is one of the first proponents of the BARF diet and has authored several books on the subject of biologically appropriate diets and evolutionary nutrition. He advocates the BARF diet as the most effective means of achieving genuine health in pet animals. The incredible health seen in pets fed the BARF diet has created a pet food revolution with breeders and pet owners worldwide. Our BARF patties and minces are formulated to be the closest possible diet to feeding in the wild and we humbly offer them to the pets of this world.

The BARF World organization was created with one simple aim in mind, to restore health to the pets of our world through evolutionary nutrition. Our BARF culture embodies the following values and all employees and associates of BARF World believe in and adhere to these principles. The “culture” of BARF World is the energy that we put out – it is our personality, our philosophy and our thoughts, it is what is driving us most of the time. But first and foremost the common theme in BARF World is our values and these values are what guide us day by day and bond us together.

BARF produces excellent, world-class products that fulfill our promise and preserve and improve the lives of our pets and return animals to their healthy, natural and biologically appropriate raw diet.

BARF is committed to the highest standards of ethics and integrity. We are responsible to our customers and our distributors, to the environment that we live in and to the animal kingdom that we serve. We take no shortcuts.

What is BARF?

BARF is an acronym for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food and also stands for Bones And Raw Food. Other apt terms include evolutionary diet, natural diet and species appropriate diet. Every living animal requires a biologically appropriate diet. If you think about it, not one animal on earth is adapted by evolution to eat a cooked food diet. This means our BARF World diet is exactly what we should be feeding to our pets.

Are you ready to begin feeding your dog or cat a healthier diet? Are you hungry for valid and truly health promising information on pet nutrition? It may be that you wish to feed a new puppy or kitten. Perhaps you are thinking of switching your older dog to a wholesome raw diet. Perhaps you have persistent dry skin and allergy problems and are tired of high vet bills and constant medication. No matter what your canine or feline’s specific needs, the BARF Diet has a simple solution.

We fight an uphill and daily battle against the giants of the processed pet food industry. Our goal is to educate and change the eating habits created by this industry. We invite you to join us in a revolution that will ultimately change how people feed their pets. Thank you for sharing the desire to make a difference and return animals to their healthy, natural and biologically appropriate raw diet. With your help and support we can make a difference.
